Wellhouse Amateur Football Club (founded on 12th September 1976)

The West of Scotland cup was played at Douglas Park, Hamilton on Monday 10^th May. The final was between Wellhouse AFC v Dumbarton Academic (old friends of ours).  The game was very lucky to go on that night because the weather so unbelievably poor as their was heavy rainfall until 7:20pm, but thanks to the experienced ground staff the game did still get the go ahead and eventually kicked off at 8pm.

The game started off slowly and the only talking point for the 1^st half was on the 20^th minute Drew Cameron with a good header at the far post, put Wellhouse AFC ahead only to be disallowed by the linesman who thought he was offside.  We kept up the pressure and had a couple of chances that we couldn’t convert.  Dumbarton Academic also had couple of chances but only for the magnificent skills of our goal keeper Marc McGeough, that kept us in the game with a couple of wonder saves especially in the last kick of the ball (Dumbarton player was right through and hit a cracker of a shot from 20 yards and our keeper some how managed to touch it over the bar, what a save.  This save meant the game finished 0-0 and took the West Cup to penalty kicks.

The atmosphere was something that we may never experience again.  Wellhouse AFC won 4-1 on penalty kicks as once again our goal keeper Marc pulled off 3 magnificent penalty kick saves from the Dumbarton squad.  Our penalty kick takers were: David Robertson, John Geddes, Danny Charters and Davy fisher (who miss hit the ball as he kicked the mud but still sent the Dumbarton keeper the wrong way).

All at the Club still can’t believe that Wellhouse AFC have won the West Cup, an east end team from Glasgow.  This was a big achievement for us and on the following Wednesday night we played a premier league game at home and proudly showed of the West Cup to our supporters.
